Investigating Tree Decay

Arborist using micro-drilling technique to assess tree decay, showcasing Ringrose Tree Services’ expertise in tree health assessment
Micro-drilling in action: Assessing internal tree decay with minimal damage

As trees age, they can face a variety of challenges, including decay which can compromise their structural integrity. Detecting this decay early is critical for ensuring public safety, maintaining tree health, and preventing costly damage.

One of the most effective tools for assessing decay in mature trees Micro-Drilling.

What is a Micro Drilling?

This is a technique using the IML Resi PD which assesses the internal condition of trees. Specifically, to detect decay and ascertain the amount of residual live wood within the trunk. Our IML Resi-PD uses a small drill bit which is driven into the tree avoiding the need to take large samples of wood. This method provides detailed insight into the internal structure of the tree without causing significant harm.

Benefit of Micro-Drilling?

The primary benefit of micro-drilling is its ability to detect internal decay that is not visible from the outside. As trees mature, decay often develops in the heartwood or other inner sections, where it’s not immediately noticeable.

Micro-drilling provides a clear picture of what’s happening inside the tree. By measuring the wood’s resistance to the drill, our arboricultural surveyors can pinpoint weak spots and areas where decay is occurring. This means problems can be caught early, allowing for timely interventions to protect the tree’s overall health.

For tree management, long-term monitoring is crucial for ensuring the ongoing health and safety of trees. Micro-drilling allows for repeated testing at different stages of a tree’s life. Regular use of micro-drilling can help track the progression of decay over time and assess whether the tree is recovering or deteriorating.

This ongoing data collection enables better planning for future tree care and helps avoid the costly surprises of unanticipated tree failures. For trees in particularly high usage areas, where the risk is higher—such as near busy footpaths, roads, or playgrounds—long-term decay monitoring can prevent accidents and provide peace of mind.
